Goa India 2013 – El-Shaddai Charity
One of our A2Z Photographers had the pleasure of visiting India for the first time in March 2013. Areez, was excited by this opportunity as the main and chief objective of visiting India was to take part in some charity work.
The Charity that Areez was invited to help with is an organization run by a dedicated team with extremely big hearts. The work they do to assist the under privileged communities of Goa is phenomenal. Working within the slums, they set up and work hand in hand with the local community to help themselves towards better future prospects. Please take the time to visit the El Shaddai website. We’d also like to extend a big thanks to Ash Miles for making this opportunity possible and getting us involved in the taking of these pictures, and furthermore, the development of their new website!
Coming from a Multimedia background, Areez has a multitude of media skills from desktop publishing and graphic design through to photography, videography and a professional ACIM qualification in Marketing.
(whilst taking the above picture I was bewildered as to what the children were doing, till I looked around and saw the two boys below laughing at me for taking a picture of the two boys using the toilet……. which I made out from his flushing the toilet sign – Areez)
When visiting the charity El-Shaddai (www.childrescue.net), Areez was exposed to a multitude of shooting environments, from 40 degree blazing heat and direct sunlight straight above, through to moments where electricty would cut out plunging a shooting destination in to darkness. (Its at these points the continuous led lights came in handy!)
“Visiting the slums across Goa, orphanages, shelters, and schools was an eye opening and humbling experience. I didn’t know what to expect, as I had never visited before. And to know that my ancestors had originated form these lands, made it very surreal! Knowing that if my great grandfather hadn’t of sailed for East Africa, then this existence in poverty could have quite easily been my story and my family’s story. Quite a scary reality!
As such it became my mission to capture all elements of what I came across, was exposed to and witnessed. The poverty, the beauty, the corruption, and any way in which I could help the charity with my photography.
This then developed in to assisting the Charity with a full redesign of their website, and furthermore a vast amount of their marketing collateral.
It having been a year since my visit to Goa, it is extremely rewarding to see the ways in which the work I conducted out there is helping the orphans and abused and neglected children of the slums in Goa!” Areez
