Southbank Skate Park- This is a shoot that dates back to 2010, and yet is still to-date one of the best concept shoots we had the pleasure of taking part in. As a collective group of artists, 26 models, 15 photographers, 7 MUAs (make up artists) and various assistants descended upon London.
We had planned to shoot at the Banksy Tunnel in Waterloo, but once we arrived, we quickly realised that the BBC had hired the Tunnel from the locval council for filming on that very day. What to do? With rain starting to come down and a group of talented artists brainstorming to find a resolution to this problem, we suggested moving on to the Southbank skate park. An area with vibrance, colour, and at the same time…. SHELTER! result.
Everyone clambering for the best positions, best model and rushing to set up, the A2Z team were probably the only ones NOT dashing around like headless chickens. The wall’s weren’t about to sprout legs and run away, and the models were with us for the whole day, so what was the rush?
Ayad, Alim, Donald and Areez were the team present for the shoot, and with 4 people working together, we collectively had enough speedlight lighting power, and remote triggers to ensure every and any challenging lighting situation could be overcome. So we set about preparing an available area which had a nice contrast of graffiti on the background. Suddenly models began to approach us to shoot with them. Having seen us focusing on setting up and ensuring our light meters were actually being used effectively, they were noticing the results from our test shots, and were willingly wanting to shoot with the A2Z Photography team. The results speak for themselves. With the models at ease, and our team working in perfect sync, the results began to pour out from the shoot.
More recently we have heard that the Southbank Skate Park is now battling for survival. From early 2013, proposals were drawn up for the skate park to be moved and in its place offices and new housing be errected. We here at A2Z Photography have used this skate park for pre-wedding shoots and model shoots, and have come to recognise this creative area is a piece of the vibrant cultural and artistic heritage of London.
